The United Nations’ State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) 2023 report reveals that over 122 million more people have been experiencing hunger since 2019, driven by the impacts of climate change, geopolitical conflicts, and economic instability.

As populations grow and urbanize, the pressure on food systems intensifies, making it essential to explore innovative solutions that can bolster food security. One such solution is water reuse, which plays a vital role in ensuring that food systems can withstand the challenges posed by water scarcity.

The Interconnection Between Water and Food Security

Water is a fundamental resource for food production, influencing everything from crop yields to nutritional quality. Approximately 40% of the world’s food is produced using irrigated water, which is vital for maintaining agricultural productivity, especially in regions prone to drought. However, with 2.4 billion people living in countries facing water stress, the availability of this essential resource is increasingly threatened. Water scarcity not only limits the quantity of food produced but also compromises its quality and safety.

The connection between water resources and food security is profound. When water becomes scarce, agricultural outputs decline, leading to increased food prices and reduced access for vulnerable populations.

For instance, during the global food price crisis of 2007-2008, a combination of low grain reserves and severe droughts pushed an additional 75 million people into chronic hunger. As climate change continues to disrupt weather patterns, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that agricultural demand will require 40% to 100% more water than previously needed by 2050. This stark reality underscores the need for innovative strategies to secure our food supply.

Water Reuse as a Solution

By treating and repurposing wastewater for agricultural use, communities can create a reliable source of irrigation that reduces dependence on freshwater supplies. In 2023, in Turkey’s Konya Closed Basin, reclaimed water was used for irrigation, resulting in a 7% increase in corn yields compared to traditional methods. This success illustrates how effective water management can lead to higher food production levels.

Similarly, Egypt faces significant challenges regarding its water supply, primarily due to its reliance on the Nile River and the pressures of a growing population. To address these issues, Egypt implemented indirect water reuse strategies in 2023 that included substantial investments in wastewater treatment plants and policies aimed at recycling agricultural drainage water.

The country’s Shared Water Reuse Strategy emphasizes sustainable practices designed to enhance agricultural productivity while conserving vital water resources. By focusing on these initiatives, Egypt aims to improve food security and ensure that its agricultural sector can thrive despite the ongoing challenges posed by water scarcity.

In addition, modern technologies are revolutionizing how we treat and reuse water. Advanced treatment processes such as membrane filtration, reverse osmosis, and biological treatment systems allow for high-quality reclaimed water suitable for irrigation and also promote environmental sustainability by reducing pollution and conserving natural resources.

Challenges and Opportunities

Investing in water reuse not only enhances food security but also brings significant economic benefits. Reusing wastewater can reduce costs associated with freshwater extraction and treatment. Farmers who adopt reclaimed water can lower their irrigation expenses while maintaining or even increasing crop yields.
