IDRA Honored to Announce H.E. Ahmed Al Rumaithi, Undersecretary, Department of Energy Abu Dhabi, as IDRA Special Advisor

Boston, MA – November 11, 2025. The International Desalination and Reuse Association (IDRA) is pleased to announce the appointment of His Excellency Ahmed Al Rumaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Energy – Abu Dhabi, as Special Advisor to the IDRA.

This appointment reflects the shared commitment of IDRA and the Department of Energy Abu Dhabi to advance global collaboration in sustainable desalination, water reuse, and climate resilience. As Special Advisor, H.E. Al Rumaithi will provide strategic guidance to strengthen IDRA’s mission of integrating innovation, finance, and policy to secure a sustainable water future for all.

The UAE has long demonstrated visionary leadership in the field of water and energy innovation and sustainability,” said Shannon McCarthy, Secretary General of IDRA. “We are honored to welcome H.E. Undersecretary Al Rumaithi as Special Advisor to our Board. His experience and forward-thinking approach will be invaluable as IDRA continues to expand its global impact through collective action and technological advancement.”

Under the leadership of Undersecretary Al Rumaithi, Abu Dhabi has pioneered next-generation desalination and reuse technologies, integrated renewable energy into its water operations, reduced its carbon footprint, and established policies that balance economic development with environmental stewardship. His appointment strengthens the bridge between regional innovation and global action on water security and climate adaptation.

H.E. Al Rumaithi stated, “It is a privilege to join IDRA in its mission to promote sustainable desalination and reuse worldwide. Through shared expertise and collaboration, we can develop scalable, equitable solutions that address the growing challenges of water scarcity and climate change.”

IDRA’s Board of Directors includes leaders from the public and private sectors, academia, and finance, representing a global network of more than 60 countries. The Association fully supports the UN Water Action Agenda, driving innovation and integration across the global water community. Established in 1973, IDRA holds UN ECOSOC and UNFCCC status, is a partner of UN Water and the FAO WASAG Program.
