Morgan tap water crowned the best in the state

September 19, 2025

SA Water’s Morgan Water Treatment Plant has taken out the title of South Australia’s best tasting tap water in IXOM’s 2025 competition.

This week, the Water Industry Operations Association of Australia (WIOA) hosted a statewide competition where 17 water samples were judged on their colour, clarity, odour and taste.

SA Water’s Senior Manager of Production and Treatment Paul Bendotti said they’re thrilled Morgan has taken out the state title for the third time, after last taking top spot in 2017 and 2016.

The win is well deserved, and testament to our hard-working local operators,” Paul said.

Water produced from the Morgan plant also consistently rates as the drinking water of choice in our own blind water taste tests we run across the state throughout the year.

It’s great for the team to be formally recognised for the high-quality water the plant produces every day.”

Operating since 1986, Morgan Water Treatment Plant in the state’s Riverland supplies safe, clean drinking water to around 130,000 homes and businesses from the state’s mid north all the way to central Eyre Peninsula.

The plant produces an average of 31 billion litres of water a year, which accounts for around 40 per cent of what is supplied to the whole of regional South Australia.

Morgan will now compete with other state winners in the national final, which will be held in Queensland this December.

The winner of the national competition will then go on to represent Australia at the annual Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting Competition held in the United States next year.

WIOA Manager of Membership, Sponsor and Exhibitor Support Glenn Alford congratulated SA Water and the team at the Morgan Water Treatment Plant on their victory.

It was a tough competition this year, but ultimately Morgan came out on top. The calibre of entries was outstanding, highlighting the dedication and expertise of water operators across the state,” Glenn said.

While this competition is a bit of fun, it also highlights the important work of the dedicated teams behind the scenes who provide our communities with safe, clean drinking water.”
