Itaipu Binacional receives the first WEG transformer with vegetable oil

With this solution, the plant reaffirms its commitment to sustainable practices, solidifying its leadership in clean and efficient energy generation

Itaipu Binacional, a global reference in energy generation, will receive a series of equipment manufactured by WEG for the expansion of the Right Bank Substation, located on the Paraguayan side of the hydroelectric plant complex.

The contract, signed in partnership with a local contractor, includes products aimed at meeting the growing energy demand and also reinforcing the company’s commitment to sustainability, by using a vegetable oil transformer. This option reduces the environmental impact when compared to mineral oil, as it is biodegradable and comes from natural sources, in addition to reducing soil and water contamination risks, contributing to environmental preservation.

This project is part of the expansion of Sector 1 of the Right Bank Substation – 66 and 23 kV Yard, intended to adjust the energy supply for feeding the Auxiliary Services of the Itaipu Hydroelectric Plant complex. The equipment was delivered in the second half of 2024 and will ensure energy supply to various areas of the complex.

The scope of the equipment manufactured and supplied by WEG includes the following:

  • Vegetable Oil Insulated Power Transformer – 66/23 kV – 10 MVA
  • Dry Power Transformer – 23/13.8 kV – 5 MVA
  • Vegetable Oil Insulated Pedestal Auxiliary Transformers – 23000/220 V – 75 kVA
  • Tripolar Switch 72.5 kV – 1250 A – 25 kA
  • Complete SPCS system with panel supply

One of the highlights of this supply is the first vegetable oil insulated transformer to be used by Itaipu, replacing the traditional mineral oil equipment with this biodegradable option. The technology was developed from a comprehensive study carried out by Itaipu’s Technical Directory, which evaluated both technical and environmental aspects. Vegetable oil not only has a higher flash point, increasing operational safety, but it is also a renewable and less environmentally impactful alternative.

In addition to the equipment directly manufactured by WEG listed above, some other equipment and components complete the supply, such as lightning arresters, Hybrid Compact Module, Medium Voltage Cubicles, and other peripheral components, such as low-voltage electrical panels, fire detection and suppression system with nebulized water, complete air conditioning system for the new building, etc.; all under WEG management.

Among the mentioned components, we can highlight the Hybrid Compact Module, composed of Switch, Current Transformers, Potential Transformers, and Circuit Breaker, intended for the protection and operation of the Power Transformer.

With this initiative, Itaipu positions itself at the forefront of the market, demonstrating that technological advancement can go hand in hand with environmental responsibility. The plant reaffirms its commitment to sustainable practices, solidifying its leadership in clean and efficient energy generation.
