As you pour yourself a glass of water, take a moment to reflect on the miracle of that simple act. For many of us, drinking clean water is so routine that we barely think about it. But imagine being a mother in a remote village, waking up before dawn to trek several miles with your children, all just to fetch water from a muddy river. Each step is heavy with worry, will this water make them sick? Will they have enough for cooking, cleaning, and drinking?

This is the reality for billions worldwide who face the daily struggle of water inequality. It’s not just about thirst but survival, dignity, and hope. In 2023, UNESCO reported that 2 billion people lack access to safe drinking water, while 3.6 billion, nearly half of humanity, live without safely managed sanitation services. These numbers represent real lives filled with challenges that many of us can hardly imagine.

Let’s dive deeper into this issue not as a dry report but as a story of inequity, resilience, and the urgent need for change.

The Water Divide – Geographical Disparities

The disparities in water access are not uniform; they vary significantly by region. For instance, in the Middle East, countries like Lebanon face critical water shortages exacerbated by economic crises and mismanagement of resources. More than 71% of Lebanon’s population struggles with water scarcity, and this crisis disproportionately affects vulnerable communities, including refugees.

In South Asia, Pakistan is on the brink of absolute water scarcity due to rapid urbanization and climate change impacts. Experts warn that without immediate intervention, the country could face severe consequences for its population’s health and agricultural productivity. Karachi alone has over 16 million residents lacking access to clean water.

Meanwhile, in Latin America and the Caribbean, 25% of the population lacks access to drinking water, with rural communities facing even greater challenges. Here, unequal pricing systems mean that those who need water the most often pay disproportionately higher rates compared to wealthier urban residents.

Now compare this with wealthier nations where clean water flows freely at the turn of a tap. Here, families spend less than 0.1% of their income on water, so little that it doesn’t even register as an expense for most people. Meanwhile, in Madagascar, low-income households might spend up to 45% of their daily earnings on this necessity. This disparity is not just unfair; it’s heartbreaking.

Climate change exacerbates these geographical disparities by altering weather patterns and increasing the frequency of extreme weather events. Regions like sub-Saharan Africa experience prolonged droughts that deplete already limited water resources. According to UNICEF data from 2022, over 703 million people worldwide lack basic drinking water services, with sub-Saharan Africa home to a significant portion of this population.

Conflict and instability further complicate access to clean water in countries like Afghanistan and Sudan. In Afghanistan, ongoing political turmoil has led to severe droughts and unsafe drinking conditions for 8 out of every 10 Afghans, while in Sudan, over 40% of families lack essential water services due to a combination of agricultural demands and desertification.

The Ripple Effect: What Does This Mean?

Health at Risk
Without safe drinking water or proper toilets, diseases like cholera, diarrhea, and typhoid thrive. According to Climate Foresight (2023), unsafe water causes over 1.4 million deaths each year, many of them children under five who are particularly vulnerable to these illnesses.

Think about it: these deaths would be entirely preventable if only clean water were available. Instead of thriving in their early years, millions of children succumb to diseases caused by something as basic as dirty water. A tragedy that should weigh heavily on all our consciences.

Economic Strains
The economic impact is another devastating consequence of unequal access to water. The lack of reliable water sources can spell disaster in agriculture-dependent regions where farming sustains entire communities. Crops fail without irrigation; livestock suffers; food supplies dwindle; incomes plummet.

The World Bank estimates that by 2050, regions facing severe water shortages could experience GDP declines of up to 6% due to agricultural losses. This isn’t just an economic problem; it’s a humanitarian one because when economies falter in these regions, poverty deepens and opportunities vanish.

Education and Gender Inequality

Now let’s shift focus to education, particularly for girls. In many rural communities, fetching water falls squarely on the shoulders of women and girls. It’s common for young girls to spend hours each day walking back and forth from distant water sources instead of sitting in classrooms.

This daily burden robs them of education, the very thing that could lift them out of poverty and provide them with better opportunities in life. It also perpetuates gender inequality because when girls miss out on schooling, they miss out on chances for personal growth and empowerment.

Bridging the Gap

Addressing global water inequality requires a combination of innovative technologies, stronger governance, and community-driven initiatives. Here’s how we can collectively work toward equitable access to clean water:

• Governments must invest in infrastructure like rainwater harvesting systems and wastewater recycling to reduce dependency on freshwater sources. These systems can provide reliable water supplies to drought-prone regions while conserving existing resources.
• Advancing desalination, and converting seawater into drinkable water is a game-changer for coastal communities.
• Water reuse initiatives, such as treating wastewater for irrigation or industrial use, can further alleviate pressure on freshwater supplies.
• Strengthening policies and governance by implementing fair pricing systems that ensure affordability for low-income households.
• Empowering local communities through education and community engagement
• Providing off-grid advanced water treatment systems powered by renewable energy
• Increasing water stewardship practices in industrial operations, wherein companies return clean water back to the watershed from which they are withdrawing water for industrial needs.

The role of IDRA

IDRA advocates for developing and implementing desalination and water reuse technologies as viable solutions to combat water shortages. Furthermore, By equipping young professionals with knowledge about desalination and water reuse technologies, IDRA ensures that future generations are prepared to tackle the growing challenges of water scarcity. The association engages with a global stakeholder community aimed to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change on our water resources, and to enhance the development of a circular water economy within the water-energy-food nexus.

The Summit will be held October 12–14, 2025, at the iconic Harpa Opera House in Reykjavik, Iceland, and is organised in collaboration with the Arctic Circle Assembly 2025.
