Fisia Italimpianti (Webuild Group) awarded €111 million contract to upgrade the Naples East Wastewater Treatment Plant

March 26, 2026

THIS KEY PROJECT STRENGTHENS FISIA’S LEADERSHIP IN WATER TREATMENT IN ITALY AND CONTRIBUTES TO PROTECTING THE GULF OF NAPLES

  • The upgrade will increase treatment capacity for approximately 860,000 residents across fourteen municipalities in the Naples area, boosting overall purification capacity by 140%.
  • The project will support the reopening of coastal areas for bathing, promoting the economy, tourism, and employment growth.

Genoa, 26 March 2026 – Enhancing water quality in the Gulf of Naples and revitalising a significant stretch of the city’s coastline are the main objectives of the €111 million upgrade to the Naples East Wastewater Treatment Plant. A project awarded to the consortium of Fisia Italimpianti (Webuild Group, 40% stake) and Spanish company Acciona (lead partner, 60% stake).

Promoted by Invitalia on behalf of the Sole Extraordinary Commissioner for Wastewater, the project represents a key step in the evolution of the water treatment system for the Naples metropolitan area and consolidates Fisia Italimpianti’s position in Italy’s water treatment sector. In fact, this new contract follows Fisia’s acquisition and the launch of the expansion and management project for the Vicenza Wastewater Treatment Plant, the largest undertaking of its kind in Italy over the past decade, which the company is currently executing.

Under this new contract, the Naples East Wastewater Treatment Plant, built in the San Giovanni a Teduccio district in the late 1990s, will be upgraded with advanced biological treatment technologies and will be able to serve around 860,000 residents across fourteen municipalities in the Naples metropolitan area, collecting wastewater from a densely populated urban zone.

With a treatment capacity of 7.2 m³/sec, the plant will increase its purification capability by 140% compared to its current performance. Structured in three phases, the heart of the new system will be an advanced biological treatment, where carefully selected and controlled bacteria remove pollutants by transforming them into biomass and allow the elimination of nitrogen and phosphorus, elements that if left untreated could disrupt the balance of the marine ecosystem. This is followed by a secondary clarification phase, which ensures the separation of sludge and the stability of the process, after which the water undergoes final filtration and disinfection using a sustainable technology that eliminates bacteria and viruses without the use of chemical agents. The project also includes the modernisation of the sludge line, with treatments aimed at reducing both its volume and environmental impact, in line with a circular economy approach. The project will be carried out in phases, so as not to disrupt the operation of the existing plant.

The launch of this project marks an important moment for the Neapolitan region, and as Fisia Italimpianti — a Webuild Group company, a global leader in the water sector—we are proud to provide our consolidated expertise in water treatment to build a cutting-edge plant capable of ensuring high environmental standards and an efficient service for the population,” said Matteo Buzzetti, General Manager of Fisia Italimpianti. “The project will contribute significantly to improving the water quality of the Gulf of Naples and to the redevelopment of an area of great social, environmental, and economic value.

Thanks to these new processes, Fisia’s intervention will contribute to the environmental restoration of a significant stretch of the eastern coast of the Naples metropolitan area, enabling the reopening of currently restricted bathing spots and supporting the region’s tourism potential, with positive effects on the local economy and employment.

With a century of consolidated expertise, Fisia Italimpianti today represents the centre of excellence of the Webuild Group in the water treatment and desalination sector. Fisia’s international track record spans water treatment plants, both completed and under construction, serving over 9 million people worldwide. It also includes desalination plants that cover the water needs of more than 20 million people, particularly in the Middle East. In addition, Fisia has delivered complex environmental remediation projects, such as Lot 2 of the Riachuelo System in Buenos Aires, one of the largest river restoration initiatives in the world.
