Cox strengthens its leadership in water with two new contracts in Spain

May 29, 2025

  • The company has been awarded the contract for the expansion of the El Hierro desalination plant by more than 5,400 m3/day to meet the growing demand of the local population.
  • In addition, it will contribute to the improvement of the Sagunto plant, one of the most important in the Valencian Community with 22,900 m3/day.
  • Cox has 5 water assets under management exceeding 945,000 m³/day, 6 power generation projects and 2 transmission line concessions. The company has a recognized leadership in the water sector with more than 250 customer certifications, more than 20 international industry awards and has supplied more than 8.3 million m³/day of desalination and treatment capacity globally.
  • Cox thus continues to meet milestones in its water business: in 2024 the company was awarded the operation and maintenance work of the Taiwan plant and has recently entered a strategic alliance (Joint Venture) with AMEA Power to accelerate the growth of water and energy infrastructures in the Middle East and Africa.

Cox, a global leader in water and energy, reinforces its global leadership position in the water desalination sector with two new contract awards in Spain.

Cox has won the contract for the Expansion of Module C of the PDS El Cangrejo, on the island of El Hierro. The works will be carried out at the EDAM of El Cangrejo, owned by the Cabildo de El Hierro, near the airport, in the municipality of Valverde. The project, promoted by the El Hierro Island Water Council, will make it possible to increase the production capacity of desalinated water by up to 5,400 m³/day to meet the growing demand of the local population.

Along with this award, Cox has been awarded the contract for the operation and maintenance of the desalination plant in Sagunto (Valencia), which it will execute together with Facsa, after the award by ACUAMED (Aguas de las Cuencas Mediterráneas, S.M.E., S.A). The Sagunto desalination plant is one of the most important in the region, with a maximum production capacity of 22,900 m3/day that supplies drinking water to more than 250,000 people through the reverse osmosis system.

These contracts follow the announcement of a strategic alliance with AMEA Power, one of the leading renewable energy companies. This alliance will help Cox exceed the objectives set out in its roadmap and achieve global leadership in desalination, with a managed capacity of 2 million m³/day, which entails a CAPEX of more than 2,400 million euros.

The Al Nowais family, owners of AMEA Power, is considered one of the most influential in the United Arab Emirates, with an outstanding track record in sectors such as energy, health and industry.

The agreement makes it possible to unify pipelines and accelerate Cox’s growth plan in the Middle East and Africa. This strategic partnership brings together Cox’s technology and innovation with the expertise of a local partner such as AMEA Power, helping to significantly minimize the risk taken by Cox in these geographies.

The company continues to make progress towards fulfilling its strategic plan and achieving the commitments established with the market. Since the end of last year, it has been running Taiwan’s largest desalination plant, a facility located in the city of Tainan, which will have a capacity of 200,000 m3/day to supply one million people.
