Cox reinforces its commitment to Taiwan and will be present at International Water Week 2025

October 29, 2025

  • Cox will exhibit its flagship project in the Middle East, the Taweelah IWP desalination plant, with a capacity of more than 900,000 cubic meters per day
  • Tainan’s largest desalination plant is in Tainan, a strategic project with which Cox will boost the area’s water security and will be able to supply drinking water to one million people
  • Cox’s portfolio exceeds 8.3 million m3/day in desalination and water treatment plants (drinking and wastewater) built and under development

Cox, a leading international company in sustainable water and energy management, will participate in Taiwan International Water Week, which will be held in Taipei this October. Cox will be showcasing its flagship project in the Middle East, the Taweelah IWP desalination plant, with a capacity of more than 900,000 cubic metres per day. Its presence at this meeting reinforces its commitment to technological innovation and sustainability in the field of integral water cycle and associated energy production.

During the event, the company will share its expertise in high-performance hydraulic and energy infrastructure, as well as its vision “Energy follows Water”, an approach that integrates the efficient use of water resources with the generation and sustainable management of energy.

Cox in Taiwan: Leadership in Desalination and water resources management

A year ago, Cox, through its partner Kuo Toong International, was awarded a major contract for the Tainan desalination plant, the largest in Taiwan, a strategic project to strengthen the country’s water security. The contract for phase 1 of what will be the largest desalination plant in Taiwan, with a capacity of 200,000 cubic meters per day, is in Tainan. With this capacity, the plant will be able to supply drinking water to one million people, in a country with a great need for water for human consumption, as well as meet the water needs for the semiconductor industry on the island.

The project includes the execution and operation for 15 years of a seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant for the Southern Region Water Resources Branch, Water Resources Agency, Ministry of Economic Affairs (Taiwan), as the final customer.

This infrastructure, equipped with state-of-the-art reverse osmosis technology, guarantees a stable and sustainable supply of drinking water for one of the regions with the greatest industrial and urban development in the south of the island. The Tainan desalination plant is part of Cox’s global strategy to promote solutions that ensure the availability of water in environments of high-water pressure, combining efficiency, resilience and sustainability.

The construction and commissioning of the plant, which is expected to employ 200 people now of greatest intensity of the process, will be carried out in two phases. In phase 1, the capacity to supply 100,000 cubic meters of water per day will be reached and will be prepared for the second phase in which 200,000 cubic meters will be reached.

Leading desalination projects worldwide

In addition to Taiwan, Cox develops and operates leading desalination projects in different parts of the world, including the Taweelah plant (United Arab Emirates), the largest operating RO desalination facility in the world, and partially powered by renewable energy, thus combining the production of drinking water with the generation of clean energy. Thanks to the installation of a photovoltaic installation with 70 MWp of power, which allows the desalination plant to be partially self-sufficient in renewable energy.

These projects consolidate Cox as a global player in water and energy management, with solutions adapted to the challenges of climate change and the sustainable growth needs of communities.

Global commitment

Cox develops plants that currently supply more than 8.3 million m3/d, including desalination and water treatment (drinking and wastewater). At Cox, we are committed to ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water, as well as providing access to clean and efficient energy, while developing sustainable and resilient transmission infrastructure. With this commitment, Cox reaffirms its purpose to contribute to the balance between development, technology and sustainability, guaranteeing access to water and energy for present and future generations.
