Cox advances in Casanare with a renewable energy project for rice production

November 14, 2025

  • The project involves an investment of more than 3 billion Colombian pesos ($750,000 USD) and an execution period of 11 months.
  • The electricity generated by this solar plant marks a milestone in Colombian agriculture, as its annual consumption is equivalent to that of approximately 912 households.
  • Cox and Solcor have a combined total of 5,000 MW in renewable energy projects, consolidating their position as leaders in photovoltaic solar energy.

Colombia, November 14, 2025. Cox, a global company specializing in water and energy, and Solcor, in partnership with Arroz Supremo, are promoting the use of solar energy in rice production in Colombia through the construction of a photovoltaic plant in the Zona Franca Central of Nunchía (Casanare). This facility will supply a large part of the energy required for operations and will help reduce dependence on conventional energy sources.

This solar project will cover an area of 8,000 m², larger than a professional football field. The solar farm will have an installed capacity of 1,169 kW, equivalent to the average annual consumption of 912 Colombian households, providing a clean and reliable energy source, improving efficiency, sustainability, and reducing operating costs.

An energy performance of 80.7% is expected, ensuring efficiency and reliability in the supply of clean energy for Arroz Supremo, without relying on Colombia’s National Interconnected System.

The alliance between the three companies is formalized as a consortium for the design, supply, construction, and installation of a photovoltaic self-generation plant. In this arrangement, the Temporary Union, formed by Cox and Solcor, will deliver the project fully ready to operate, from engineering and equipment procurement to assembly, grid connection, and regulatory procedures.

“The Colombian agricultural sector can also contribute to the energy transition, and this project demonstrates that progress and renewable energies go hand in hand toward that goal,” said Alejandro Huertas, Country Manager Colombia at Cox.

This project is a milestone for Colombian agriculture and specifically for the rice sector, as it will enable Arroz Supremo to advance in its transition toward more sustainable operations, aligned with national objectives for emission reduction and the promotion of renewable energies. Additionally, the initiative reinforces the joint commitment of Cox, Solcor, and Arroz Supremo to energy efficiency and the modernization of Colombian agriculture.
