Baku, Republic of Azerbaijan – 17 January 2025: ACWA Power, the world’s largest private water desalination company, a leader in energy transition, and a pioneer in green hydrogen, announces that the consortium of ACWA Power and IC İÇTAŞ İNŞAAT SANAYİ VE TİCARET A.Ş. has been selected as the successful bidder for the Caspian SWRO project by the Government of Azerbaijan. The consortium will build a seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant with a daily capacity of approximate 300,000 cubic metres.

Located at the Sumgayit Chemical Industrial Park in Azerbaijan, the plant will meet the increasing demand for drinking water in Baku and the Absheron Peninsula. ACWA Power was chosen as the successful bidder for the project following a competitive tender process conducted within the first ever public-private partnership (PPP) framework in Azerbaijan.

According to the announcement, the project’s duration is 27.5 years, after which consortium will transfer the management of the facility to the Azerbaijan State Water Resources Agency.

“ACWA Power is honoured to secure this critical project in Azerbaijan, supporting the Azerbaijani government and its entities in improving water supply and climate change resilience. This achievement highlights ACWA Power’s competitive advantage in the international desalination market and reaffirms its commitment to providing sustainable and affordable supply of potable water to the communities globally” Marco Arcelli, Chief Executive Officer of ACWA Power.

Azerbaijan is prioritising enhanced water resource management to address water security challenges, aligning with its National Strategy on Efficient Use of Water Resources.

ACWA Power has been active in Azerbaijan since 2019, leveraging a public-private partnership model to attract foreign direct investment for key infrastructure projects including 240 MW Absheron-Khizi wind farm.
