AWAES, a Tedagua’s company, leads AQUAHUB, an innovation project in Wastewater and Circular Economy

February 10, 2025

  • AQUAHUB represents a revolution in wastewater treatment through advanced technology and a focus on the circular economy.
  • It offers a viable alternative in water-stressed areas, reducing environmental impact, promoting energy sustainability, and transforming waste into useful products like fertilizers.

Advanced Water And Energy Solutions (AWAES), is the new innovation subsidiary of Tedagua and Cobra Infraestructuras Hidráulicas, leading companies in the Water and Energy sectors of the Cobra Group. AWAES is born with a firm commitment to developing innovative and unique solutions in the water and energy sectors to address the global challenges facing the planet, such as climate change, water stress, and aging infrastructure.

The project “AQUAHUB: Enhancing Water Quality, Sustainability, and Circular Economy through a Madrid-based Hub of Innovative Technological Solutions,” led by AWAES, and colaborated by INCRO, Fertiberia, QuantIA, Pyrocatalytica, and the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), is a groundbreaking initiative in wastewater treatment using advanced technology and a circular economy approach. This 36-month project aims to turn environmental challenges into sustainable opportunities.

With a budget of 4.5 million euros, of which 2.1 million are funded by the European Regional Development Fund, AQUAHUB (file number 59/561770.9/24) aims to improve public-private cooperation in R&D and support technological innovation projects in the Madrid region.

AQUAHUB implements innovative solutions that integrate various technologies to optimize wastewater treatment and maximize resource recovery. Key features include the Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactor (AnMBR), which reduces up to 90% of chemical oxygen demand (COD), produces high-quality biogas, and generates water suitable for fertigation, while also recovering essential nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen.

Tertiary treatment and water regeneration are crucial in the project, achieving up to 99% removal of emerging contaminants and microplastics. Thermal valorization of waste converts sludge and other residues into biochar suitable for use as fertilizer.

The production and enhancement of biomethane, with a purity above 95%, is another critical aspect, making it suitable for injection into natural gas networks. Additionally, AQUAHUB focuses on digitalization and artificial intelligence through an intelligent data management system that uses predictive models and digital twins to optimize processes and anticipate operational issues.

AQUAHUB helps close the water cycle and offers a viable alternative in water-stressed areas, reducing environmental impact, promoting energy sustainability, and supporting the circular economy by transforming waste into useful products like fertilizers.
