TAURON and SUEZ have signed a letter of intent aimed at diversifying Poland’s energy mix

June 3, 2026

  • This partnership between SUEZ and TAURON, one of Poland’s leading energy groups, marks a key step in TAURON’s strategy to diversify its energy generation portfolio through alternative energy sources, supporting Poland’s ecological transition.
  • This new cooperation further demonstrates SUEZ’s ability to drive the ecological transition of industrial clients, while strengthening its footprint in Poland, a key market for the Group’s development in Eastern Europe.

TAURON and SUEZ have signed a letter of intent to analyze opportunities for developing heat and electricity production from alternative fuels, including energy-from-waste (EfW) technologies. SUEZ would leverage its extensive experience in waste management and energy production from waste and wastewater to support the potential development of local energy from waste solutions, contributing to reducing the use of fossil fuels.

One of Poland’s leading energy groups, TAURON is committed to decarbonize its activities. This major project will support its strategy to accelerate the green transition and charts a path towards climate neutrality by 2040.
Such facilities, in addition to enhancing fuel diversification, as Poland’s energy mix mainly relies on fossil fuels (around 63% in 2024), also help address waste management challenges. The synergy between energy production and waste processing still holds significant untapped development potential in Poland.

TAURON is currently conducting technical and site-selection analyses across Poland regarding potential investments in facilities utilizing alternative fuels.

Leveraging waste management to produce alternative energy

One of the global leaders in waste and water services, SUEZ has unparalleled experience in operating energy-from-waste facilities, currently managing 43 plants worldwide, which treat 4.8 Mt of waste per year, producing 3.3 TWh for heating and 2.8 TWh of electricity.

Thanks to its energy recovery facilities, the Group supplies energy to communities and industries in their territory from their waste and establishes local recovery circuits. This allows waste to be transformed into energy for a circular and sustainable economy and reduces dependence on fossil fuels and imported energy.

Michał Orłowski, Vice President of the Management Board for Asset Management and Development at TAURON Polska Energia S.A., said: “We are consistently implementing our strategy of transforming and diversifying our generation portfolio. The use of alternative fuels in heating can help solve the waste problem for local communities and ensure cost-effective heat production. The project aims to identify locations with the greatest potential for the TAURON Group.”

SUEZ has been present in Poland for over 30 years. With 220 people, the Group runs Consulting activities, as well as operations in water, wastewater and waste. It oversees the design, construction and financing of wastewater treatment plants, runs anaerobic digestion biogas production and provides smart solutions to its clients.
