Impact summary

To improve the performance of the Agadir desalination plant, Cox implemented an innovative approach: ultrafiltration backwash using RO reject, with minimal piping and control modifications, ensuring operational flexibility and preservation of permeate quality. Since April 2025, the solution has increased the water recovery rate, reduced energy and chemical consumption, improved pre-treatment efficiency, and promoted internal reuse and sustainability.

Outlook

This approach increases water recovery, saves energy, enhances system robustness, and improves pre-treatment efficiency while maintaining the performance of ultrafiltration (UF) and reverse osmosis (RO). By reusing RO brine, it promotes circular water use, reduces environmental impact, and offers a scalable and resource-efficient solution that can be replicated in other desalination plants with variable seawater quality.
