CDM Smith Completes the Sunol Valley WTP Ozonation Design and Receives an Envision Silver Award

January 30, 2026

SAN FRANCISCO—CDM Smith has completed the design phase on the Sunol Valley Water Treatment Plant (SVWTP) Ozonation project. The design received an Envision Silver Award from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI), reflecting its exemplary progress toward sustainability. These milestones mark the project team’s significant progress and support for the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC).

The goal of the project is to install ozone treatment facilities at the 168 million-gallons-per-day (mgd) SVWTP, a long-term water treatment solution to mitigate taste and odor events encountered in the raw water supply. The existing plant has a unique design, and implementing ozonation into the existing process, mechanical and electrical systems posed design and construction challenges for the team. The design utilizes a small footprint on the existing site and provides flexibility to either blend or treat water sources separately. The construction phase will carry into 2028.

Receiving the ISI Envision Silver Award reflects CDM Smith’s commitment to provide sustainable and forward-thinking water solutions to our clients. Our team’s SVWTP ozonation design showcases our innovative approach to deliver a water treatment solution to support SFPUC, a longstanding client we have supported for over 30 years,” said Servando Molina, client service leader.

CDM Smith is a privately owned engineering and construction firm providing legendary client service and smart solutions in water, environment, transportation, energy, and facilities. Passionate about our work and invested in each other, we are inspired to think and driven to solve the world’s environmental and infrastructure challenges.
