Help name the two machines that will build the Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plant!

March 5, 2025

Think you’ve got a winning name for these boring machines? Now could be your chance to make groundbreaking history for WA!

With the Alkimos Seawater Desalination Plant project well underway, two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) will arrive soon to start the next phase of the plant’s construction.

The TBMs will build two underground marine pipelines: one to bring seawater into the plant, and the other to take the brine (salty water) back out to the ocean.

As we move forward with this important project to help secure our water future, we’re asking for your help to name these two vital pieces of machinery!

A centuries-old tradition for bringing good luck

The naming of TBMs is a custom that dates back to the early days of tunnelling and heavy machinery use.

Historically, these machines are named after women, which is a nod to Saint Barbara: the patron saint of miners and tunnellers, who is believed to offer protection to those working underground.

This time-honoured practice is now also your chance to make your mark in a project that will benefit generations to come.

What’s in a name?

Our competition judges are looking for names that reflect Alkimos’ history, location and community.

We encourage you to take inspiration from the area’s storied past: from its traditional Whadjuk Noongar heritage and cultural significance to its fascinating maritime history and evolution into the suburb it is today.

Naming the TBMs is also an opportunity to recognise a local legend who digs deep for the Alkimos community.
